The satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) offers excellent possibilities for mobile navigation. In the meantime also mobile phones reached the required performance. In addition the mobile phones equipped with the programming language Java offer the possibility of making software available by third-party vendors.

It is self-evident to connect a GPS receiver over Bluetooth™ or data cable with a Java™ capable mobile phone and to create so cost-efficient navigation solutions. Possibly an integrated GPS receiver can be used. Here four solutions are presented: GPSViewer, Wayviewer, LocViewer, and POIAlert.

GPSViewer shows the time, the current position, the speed and the moving direction on the display of the mobile phone.

Wayviewer is a cost-efficient navigation system. The routes are calculated in advance by ADAC TourPlaner® or similar or Microsoft® MapPoint® and are transferred to the mobile phone afterwards. But no subscription is required and there are no route-specific fees or on-line costs. The driving instructions are given on the display of the mobile and by voice output.

LocViewer loads map sections according to the current position from a Web service from the Internet and indicates the position on the display of the mobile phone. As data source e.g. road maps or satellite photos can be selected. In addition the speed and the moving direction are indicated. The map sections can be panned and zoomed. LocViewer Pro can additionally manage waypoints, import and export GPX files, send the current position by SMS or to an Internet server, log the GPS data to a file, and monitor the current position.

POIAlert indicates so called POIs (Points of Interest) by voice and display output. In particular POIAlert warns against speed and red light cameras.

The user interface of all applications is English, German, or Russian depending upon language set in the mobile phone.
